When news broke of Pat Summitt’s decision to step down, Trevecca Nazarene University basketball player Lauren Wasson was among the many who were disappointed.”I knew it was gonna happen, I just didn’t want to believe it,” said Wasson. The Trevecca guard has fond memories of meeting Summitt at middle school basketball camps and watching her team practice at Trevecca during this year’s SEC tournament.”She was so nice and genuine but when it came time to be serious she told you exactly what you needed to do. She never sugar coated anything,” said Wasson.Wasson’s coach Gary Van Atta tells a similar story about how genuine Summitt is.”The very first time I met her I was like how are you doing nice to meet you and she started asking questions about me how I was doing,” said Van Atta. The Trevecca coach first met Pat Summitt when he was a high school coach in the late 80s.He’s come to know her personally over the years and even coached her niece. He says Summitt played a crucial role in modernizing the girls game even at the high school level in Tennessee.”Through her influence it went from 3 on 3 to 5 on 5 and the rest is history,” said Van Atta.Van Atta says he’s happy to hear the Tennessee legend is staying on in a personal role with the team as he believes she can still have a positive influence.”She hasn’t changed at all over the years. She’s a genuine person. The fame and wins haven’t changed her one bit that’s what makes Pat Pat.”
