She is Tennessee’s only female death row inmate. Investigators say Christa pike was trying to break out of prison. A former correction officer was allegedly involved in the scheme. The Tennessee Prison for Women is designed to keep inmates locked inside. “Our investigative unit of the TDOC was able to detect early on that there was a threat,” says Tennessee Department of Correction spokesperson Dorinda Carter.Pike has been on death row since 1996 for murdering a 19 year old Knoxville woman. Over the years Donald Kohut began visiting Pike, and allegedly helped to hatch a plan to break her out. Investigators believe the key to the plot was bribing an inside man – 23 year old correction officer Justin Heflin.”We ended up arresting a correctional officer, who had been receiving some money and gifts from another individual,” says Kristin Helm with the TBI.Both Heflin and Kohut were arrested before the escape could be attempted. The Department of Correction says a threat to the prison is a threat to the public.”And our mission is not to compromise public safety, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that doesn’t happen,” says Dorinda Carter.Correction officer Heflin was on leave during the investigation. A DOC spokesperson says he failed to live up to his oath, and has now been terminated.”We’re here to protect the people of Tennessee, and if you can’t do that you will be terminated, and you will be criminally prosecuted,” says Dorinda Carter.
