He has a lengthy criminal history and decided to run from an officer who tried to make a routine traffic stop in Hixson.Now Jerry Abernathy just got a few more felonies added to his record. Friday morning he drove his mother’s SUV into a ditch on Grubb Road. It happened seconds after a Hamilton County deputy tried to stop him for a traffic violation. Once Abernathy crashed he bailed out and took off running.Within minutes the area was surrounded by officers from the county, Chattanooga and Red Bank. After a K-9 unit lost Abernathy’s scent the search was called off since they knew who they were looking for and where to find him.Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Janice Atkinson said “probably about an hour later some of the people who live on Dayton Boulevard actually saw the guy come out of the woods and called deputies again.”Atkinson said Abernathy tried to get into two houses while on the lam so officers with guns drawn continued canvassing the area near Red Bank. Men working on a house under construction later called 911 saying a man just ran into the house.”Corporal Fields approached the house from their phone call and I think the guy tried to run out the back door but there was no way to get out of the house so he was pretty well trapped …
